VPS, cloud hosting and hosted apps, that’s what VPS.net’s favorite territory. This UK-based VPS company has been in the hosting business since 2006 and has since specialized in cloud hosting solutions for businesses of all kinds. Today, VPS.net has servers running in over 20 locations around the world with support for a whole range of popular web apps including WordPress and Magento. We were eager to learn more about the company and got an interview with the team’s Bill Rossell.
Why do you work with a partner like OnApp for building your cloud platform?
OnApp offers a comprehensive cloud management platform, which allows us to easily manage our infrastructure, while also adding in several unique benefits specific to only VPS.net customers.
How do you ensure that your international servers perform at the same speed as your US-based servers?
All of our data centers go through a thorough compliance test, consisting of security, performance and procedure adherence.
Can your cloud hosting be used for hosting a VPN?
Our cloud servers can be used for a VPN without problem. We have an OS install template that actually allows users to easily setup a VPN.
In which cases would you recommend a cloud server over a cloud hosting plan?
Cloud hosting works great for websites that are just starting out, with lower traffic levels and don't require any customizations to the hosting environment.
When a user needs a highly customized environment with guaranteed performance levels, we recommend our cloud servers.
What level of technical support do you provide to users who want to host their custom software or CMS on their VPS.net server?
We manage the infrastructure powering the server only. We do not handle the CMS installation or the server software.
What types of websites should make use of a CDN?
Websites with a significant amount of static content, like CSS files, javascript files or images, will benefit most from a CDN.
What makes VPS.net better than other VPS hosting providers such as Linode?
VPS.net offers a product that's a full evolution cycle ahead of VPS providers. Our Cloud Servers are able to scale dynamically, adding resources as necessary, while also having the ability to auto-heal in event of a hardware failure. This is accomplished by having multiple servers work together to power the cloud.
How does Cloud Brain, which takes care of the scaling of your servers, work?
You're able to set resource thresholds which are monitored; if the threshold is ever reached, it automatically adds additional resources.
Which new hosted applications will you be adding to your app store in the near future?
We're always talking to many different application providers, however 2013 will be focused on adding new value to the existing applications available.
Are you planning on offering more server locations in Asia and Europe?
As demand allows.
What else does VPS.net have in store for the future?
Load balancing, clone and migration tools, and other things to make using the cloud easier.
Many thanks to Bill Rossell and the rest of the VPS.net team for taking the time to do this interview with us. Those of you who are a customer of VPS.net should certainly submit their review of the company on our site.
